2026 1099-NEC Threshold: The New $2,000 Rule for Business Owners

2026 Form 1099-NEC reporting threshold increased to $2,000. Belshaw Accounting guide for small business owners and subcontractors.

If your business hires subcontractors, freelancers, or independent service providers, there's an important tax change you should know about. Beginning with payments made in 2026, the federal Form 1099-NEC reporting threshold increased from $600 to $2,000. That's a meaningful change for small business owners. But it doesn't eliminate the need to maintain accurate vendor records, collect W-9s, or track subcontractor payments throughout the year.

Here's what changed and what you should do before year-end.

What Is the New 1099-NEC Threshold?

For eligible nonemployee compensation paid during 2026, businesses generally must issue Form 1099-NEC when payments to a recipient total $2,000 or more during the calendar year. The previous threshold was $600.

Payment year

Reporting threshold

2025

$600

2026

$2,000

The new threshold applies to payments made during 2026. It does not retroactively change the reporting requirements for 2025. The threshold is subject to inflation adjustments beginning in 2027.

Which Payments Generally Require Form 1099-NEC?

The rules generally apply when a business makes qualifying payments for services to someone who is not its employee.

Examples include payments to:

  • Independent construction subcontractors

  • Freelance consultants

  • Self-employed repair technicians

  • Independent cleaning professionals

  • Landscaping subcontractors

  • Other independent service providers

The reporting requirement depends on several factors, including the payment amount, the recipient's tax classification, and the method of payment. For example, payments to many corporations are generally exempt, although special exceptions apply, including certain legal-service payments. Payments made through credit cards and qualifying third-party payment networks are generally subject to separate Form 1099-K reporting rules.

When Are 2026 Forms 1099-NEC Due?

Forms reporting eligible payments made during 2026 are generally due to recipients and the IRS by February 1, 2027. The normal January 31 deadline falls on a Sunday, moving the deadline to the next business day. Waiting until January to organize your records can make this process unnecessarily difficult.

What Happens If You Paid Someone Less Than $2,000?

A contractor who receives less than $2,000 from a particular customer may not receive a Form 1099-NEC from that payer. That does not mean the income is tax-free.

Self-employed individuals generally must report their taxable business income whether or not a customer issues a Form 1099. The reporting threshold determines the payer's form-filing requirement. It does not determine whether the recipient's income is taxable.

Why You Should Still Collect W-9s

Form W-9 provides the information businesses need to determine how vendor payments should be reported. It generally includes the recipient's legal name, tax classification, address, and taxpayer identification number. We recommend making the W-9 part of your standard subcontractor onboarding process. Collect it before the first payment. That way, you're not trying to track down missing information months after the work is complete. Missing taxpayer identification information can also create backup withholding obligations.

How Good Bookkeeping Helps

Accurate monthly bookkeeping makes it easier to review payments made throughout the calendar year. You should be able to identify:

  • Who your business paid

  • How much each vendor received

  • Which payments may require reporting

  • Whether supporting vendor information is complete

For cash-basis businesses, reviewing payments actually made during the calendar year is especially important. Your bookkeeping should help you prepare for tax season, not create another project in January.
